 About Shamus
I would like for you to know about me and how I got into training horses....

My parents sat me on my first horse the day they brought me home from the hospital.  By the age of 8 years old, I was showing in and doing quite well in Youth Horse Shows and Rodeos. By the age of 11, I had started my first Colt.  Soon after I was riding colts for the general public. I have been ranching and riding horses ever since.

I started my Bull riding career at age 13, and continued on to be a PRCA cardholder as well as one of the first men in Utah to be invited to the PBR in 1996. I retired riding Bulls in 1999. My Rodeo career has helped my horsemanship skills by teaching me feel, timing, balance and determination.

My wife, Jolyn and I make our home in beautiful, western Utah. We are the proud parents of 4 daughters. They are all top hand cowgirls.

Jolyn and I, as well as my in-laws, Terry & Elaine George, own Running U Livestock, Inc.   Running U Livestock, is a second generation, family owned and operated working horse and cattle ranch, located in western Utah.  I have  been running the day-to-day operations of the 30,000+ acre ranch and crew here for the past 16 years and I am very proud of the great Foundation Bred Quarter Horses that we raise.   We are considered one of the largest Quarter Horse breeders in the state of Utah. I personally oversee 6 breeding stallions, 200+ broodmares, over 250 head of horses total and a commercial herd of cattle.

We have established one of the most reputable and sought after Production Horse Sales in the Intermountain West area.  Our auction holds one of the highest selling averages in the state.  Selling 50- 60 horses each year nationwide. Every year to date, horses that are personally trained and ridden by me have topped the sale. I personally Halter break 30-40 foals per year. Starting 50-60 colts annually ,always preparing them for all aspects of ranch work.  Between my clinics and the ranch, I get the pleasure of spending 300+ days in the saddle each year.

I have been lucky enough to be able to conduct both private and public Colt Starting and Horsemanship clinics throughout the Western United States. I have had huge response and great positive feedback in regards to my Horsemanship methods and my ability to verbally and physically help both horse and rider.  I love starting colts, working with troubled horses and helping people gain and refine a deeper sense of communication with their horse.  In 2009 I was named as one of the Top Four Horse Trainers in the state of Utah by the Utah Horse Council. In March of 2011, I was chosen as the "Best Horse Trainer In Utah", when I won the Utah Horse Trainers Challenge.   I am also very honored to be chosen as an AQHA Professional Horseman.

With more than 20 years of Horse Training and Ranching experience, I am always very eager to share my knowledge, and the knowledge that I have learned from spending time with other great Horseman such as, Bryan Neubert and Joe Wolter.  Along with the influences of Ray Hunt and the Dorrence Brothers.  I feel that I am always a continual student of Horsemanship. You can never gain enough knowledge. My goals on every colt I start, is to keep them soft, supple, balanced , quiet, willing and responsive. I love the challenge of convincing horses to" want to" , rather than making them" have to" .

My passion in life has always been with horses and always will be. This passion has led me to many great opportunities and people, and I have been blessed to be able to share it with many.  I have decided that my place is to make a top notch, versatile using horse that anybody can get along with or go and show for themselves.  As a reputable Horse Breeder and Trainer, I feel it is my obligation to share my knowledge in a positive and influential way.

                                              Thank You,

                                              Shamus Haws
