While Shamus makes his living on the back of a horse, the work he does on the ranch is made much easier because of good cowdogs. Shamus began using Hangin Tree Cowdogs on his place in 2005. After years of breeding and training Hangin Tree Cowdogs for himself, he recently decided to begin offering his purebred, appendix registered pups and started dogs to the public.
The Hangin Tree Cowdog is a composite breed, consisting of 3/8 Border Collie, 1/8 Catahoula, 1/4 Kelpie, and 1/4 Australian Shepherd. They are working dogs bred specifically to gather, retrieve, and herd cattle. Hangin Tree Cowdogs are intelligent dogs with the courage to stand up to all types of cattle, and the bone structure to hold up to the abuse that often homes from being kicked and ran over. What's unique about the Hangin Tree is that only qualified dogs can be registered. For a dog to be approved, you must submit proof of the dog biting both the head and the heels of a cow. This permanent registration process ensures that the dog is proven to work.
